There are now dozens of suppliers in Gujarat happy to print the word "alkaline" on a bottle. The differences that matter are not visible at first look — they show up two months in, when the pH starts drifting, the dispatch slips a day, or the custom label arrives in a slightly different shade than the proof. A 30-minute filter on the front end saves a quarter of operational headaches on the back end.
Ask for the pH band, not the pH number
A supplier that quotes "pH 8.5" without a range is telling you the target, not the reality. Production water moves. Ask for the band their batches actually land in — the answer should be tight, something like 8.0 to 9.0. If the answer is vague or the band is wider than 1.0, the alkaline is being shifted at the end of the line rather than mineralised at source.
Ask for the mineral breakdown
- Calcium and magnesium — these are what give alkaline water its softer mouthfeel.
- Bicarbonates — what actually buffers the pH and keeps it stable in the bottle.
- Sodium — should be low; high sodium reads flat and is bad practice for daily consumption.
- TDS — should sit between 80 and 250 mg/L for meaningful mineral content.
Ask about dispatch reliability
A standing weekly slot only matters if it holds. Ask for the on-time dispatch rate across the last 90 days. Ask what the supplier does if a truck breaks down at 7am on your delivery morning. Ask how lead time changes during monsoon. The answers tell you whether the operations team is real or improvised.
Ask about labels
A serious supplier handles label design, pre-press and application in-house. A weaker one outsources every step and the lead times compound. Ask how many days from approved artwork to first dispatch. Ask what their reorder turnaround looks like once the label is set. Two weeks is fine, six weeks is a problem.
Ask for BIS and lab reports
BIS certification is the floor, not a feature. Recent third-party lab reports — within the last six months — should be on hand. A supplier that hesitates to share them is one to skip.
The supplier filter that separates the top tier from the rest is whether they will publish their own numbers without being chased.
