The glass-versus-PET conversation usually starts on cost and ends nowhere useful. The honest answer is that most properties end up running both — glass at the front of house where presentation matters, PET in back-of-house, banqueting, and high-turn settings where every gram of weight is operational drag. Picking the right format per use case beats picking a winner overall.
Where glass earns its place
- In-room placement for suites and premium rooms — 250ml, 300ml, 750ml.
- Restaurant table service — 750ml for fine dining, 300ml for two-cover tables.
- Conference top tables, panel discussions, and any setting that ends up on camera.
- Wedding head tables and reception décor — the format is visibly different from a banquet pour.
Where PET earns its place
- Banqueting at scale — 500ml or 1L PET, distributed in cartons, retrieved cleanly.
- In-room placement for standard category rooms where 1L PET is the brief.
- Event greenrooms, sponsor stands, and any high-turn or high-throw setting.
- Outdoor functions, mandap settings, and anywhere glass would be a safety problem.
The cost gap, in plain numbers
Glass costs more than PET on a per-bottle basis — roughly two to three times for the same volume, depending on size and label type. For a small property running 80 cartons monthly, the cost difference of running glass at the front of house and PET at the back is in the low thousands per month. For a banqueting-heavy hotel, the gap is larger but still small relative to the brand benefit of glass where it counts.
The sustainability angle, honestly
Glass is more energy-intensive to make but infinitely recyclable. PET is lighter to ship but recycling rates in India remain low. Neither is clean; both are widely used. The honest framing is that volume is what costs the planet — a property that runs through fewer bottles by using larger format or jug service makes a bigger difference than choosing between glass and PET at the same volume.
Most properties that get this right run glass at the table and PET at the carton — not one or the other.
