pH 8+ Alkaline Water — Why the Threshold Matters

Brands routinely call water "alkaline" the moment the pH ticks above 7. The threshold that actually counts is 8.0 — below it the body barely notices a difference. Here is what changes once water clears that line.

A pH of 7.2 is technically alkaline, but the human body buffers it back to neutral so fast that you would never notice. The useful threshold for alkaline drinking water is pH 8.0. That is the point where the buffering takes long enough to do anything meaningful, the mouthfeel actually changes, and the water starts pairing differently with food.

What changes at pH 8 to 9

  • Mouthfeel becomes noticeably softer — less sharp on the palate, easier to drink continuously through a workout or a long meeting.
  • Reflux-prone drinkers tolerate it better — early evidence suggests pH 8.8 water can deactivate one of the enzymes involved in laryngeal reflux.
  • It pairs better at the table — acidic waters fight against food; alkaline waters sit underneath it.
  • Hydration is marginally more efficient under high sweat output, which is why endurance athletes lean on it.

What does not change

pH 8+ water is not going to alkalise your blood, change your body chemistry or cure anything. Your stomach acid sits around pH 1.5 to 3.5 and resets the pH of anything you drink within minutes. The benefits that hold up are tactile, palate-related, and edge-of-the-margin for hydration — real, measurable, but not dramatic.

How to read a label

If a brand calls a bottle alkaline without printing a pH range, the pH is probably 7.2 to 7.6 — technically true, functionally nothing. ORA bottles print the band the water actually lands in (typically pH 8.0 to 9.0) and carry the mineral profile that produced it. That second part matters: the pH on its own tells you almost nothing about whether the water will drink well.

pH 8.0 is the line where alkaline water stops being a label and starts being a different drink.
