pH in Drinking Water — Explained Without the Jargon

pH labels show up on bottled water now but rarely with explanation. Here is what the number actually means, where neutral and alkaline sit, and what a useful pH range looks like.

pH is one of those numbers that gets quoted constantly and explained almost never. The short version: pH is how a liquid sits on a scale from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral, anything below 7 is acidic, and anything above 7 is alkaline. Where your drinking water sits on that scale matters, but not in the way most marketing suggests.

The scale, with real examples

  • pH 1 to 3 — battery acid, gastric acid, lemon juice. Strongly acidic.
  • pH 3 to 5 — soft drinks, coffee, beer, vinegar. Acidic.
  • pH 5 to 7 — black tea, rainwater, most tap water. Mildly acidic to neutral.
  • pH 7 — pure water at room temperature. Neutral.
  • pH 7 to 8 — most natural spring waters, blood (7.4). Mildly alkaline.
  • pH 8 to 9 — meaningful alkaline drinking water. Where the upgrade lives.
  • pH 9+ — strongly alkaline. Not standard drinking territory.

What pH range you actually want

For everyday drinking, a stable pH between 6.5 and 8.5 is what BIS regulations allow for packaged drinking water. For alkaline-positioned bottled water, the useful range is 8.0 to 9.0 — below 8.0 the difference is unnoticeable, above 9.0 the mouthfeel starts becoming distractingly soft. ORA bottles land in the 8.0 to 9.0 band consistently because the alkaline character is achieved through mineralisation, not chemical adjustment.

Why pH alone is not enough

A bottle that prints pH but not mineral content is telling you the easy thing without the important thing. Alkaline water at pH 8.5 that has no mineral structure drinks flat and offers none of the secondary benefits. The pH on its own is just the headline number — the mineral profile underneath is what makes the water actually work.
