Alkaline water is drinking water with a pH higher than 7, almost always in the 8.0 to 9.5 band. The pH itself is only half the story — the more useful question is how the water got there and what minerals it carries. A bottle labelled "alkaline" can mean a thoughtfully mineralised water or a quick chemical adjustment, and the two drink very differently.
pH in one paragraph
pH is a 0 to 14 scale that describes how acidic or basic a liquid is. Pure water sits at 7, neutral. Below 7 is acidic — soft drinks live around 2.5 to 3.5, coffee around 5. Above 7 is alkaline — most natural spring waters sit between 7.5 and 8.5. Alkaline drinking water is engineered or naturally drawn to stay in the 8.0 to 9.5 band, deliberately and consistently.
Two ways water gets to alkaline
- Natural mineralisation — water passes through mineral-rich rock and picks up calcium, magnesium, potassium and bicarbonates along the way. The pH rises as a side-effect of the dissolved mineral content. This is the version that drinks smooth and has structure.
- Electrolysis or chemical adjustment — a unit splits or dosing-adjusts source water to shift pH upward. Faster and cheaper to produce, but the mouthfeel and stability depend heavily on the source water and how clean the process is.
What the health claims actually say
Honest version: alkaline water is not a cure for anything. The credible findings are narrower than the marketing copy and worth knowing. Mineralised alkaline water hydrates a touch more efficiently than acidic water for people with high sweat output. It tends to be better tolerated by people who get reflux. It pairs better with food because it does not cut through flavour the way an acidic water can. Outside those, most of the strong claims do not survive a controlled trial.
What to check on the bottle
- A printed pH range — a label that says "alkaline" with no number is hiding something.
- TDS (total dissolved solids) — meaningful alkaline water sits in the 80 to 250 mg/L band; ultra-low TDS reads flat.
- A mineral breakdown — calcium, magnesium, potassium, bicarbonates. If the label is silent here, the water was probably pH-shifted, not mineralised.
- A batch and date — every bottle should be traceable to a specific production batch.
- BIS certification — non-negotiable for any packaged drinking water sold in India.
Read the label first, the marketing second. A bottle that publishes its pH range and mineral profile is telling you it has nothing to hide.
