The conversation about plastic water bottles oscillates between two overstated positions: that PET is an unmitigated disaster, and that "100% recyclable" makes it fine. Both miss the actual cost, which is more interesting and more fixable than either narrative.
What the bottle itself costs
A 500ml PET bottle uses roughly 20 grams of plastic and 7 to 10 grams of CO2 equivalent to produce. Multiply across an Indian market of 30+ billion bottles annually and the volume becomes the story — not the per-bottle number. PET is recyclable, and recycled PET (rPET) bottles are now standard in some categories, but India's actual recovery rate for post-consumer PET sits around 60%. The other 40% is the part that ends up in landfill, in roadside disposal, or in waterways.
Where the volume actually comes from
- High-frequency small-format consumption — 200ml and 500ml bottles bought one at a time.
- Event and conference catering — 1L PET distributed without a return cycle.
- In-room hotel placement where bottles are replaced daily regardless of consumption.
- Office water where larger jug or dispenser formats would work as well.
What actually reduces the cost
- Larger format for the same usage — one 1L vs two 500ml halves the bottle count.
- Glass at the front of house, PET only where the operational case demands it.
- Return cycles for glass — large hotels can run empty collection on a weekly basis.
- rPET sourcing — buying from suppliers that use recycled feedstock, where the option exists.
- Reusable formats for office and conference settings — refill stations beat individual bottles.
Volume is the cost, not the material. A property that runs through fewer bottles makes a bigger difference than one that switches from PET to glass at the same volume.
